Part 2: Thirsting For the Right Thing- Refreshed In Purpose
Lesson Focus
There’s a moment in every woman’s journey when God interrupts the ordinary with the extraordinary. The Samaritan woman came to the well burdened by her past, seeking only water to get through another day. Yet in that encounter, she discovered a deeper purpose — one that transformed her shame into strength and her story into a testimony.
When we truly encounter Jesus, we are never the same. His living water doesn’t just refresh us — it restores our identity, renews our confidence, and redirects our path. The same woman who once avoided people ran back to the very ones she hid from, declaring, “Come, see a man who told me everything I ever did” (John 4:29). That’s what happens when God refreshes our purpose: fear turns into boldness, and pain becomes part of His plan.
Purpose is not something we chase — it’s something revealed when we allow Jesus to fill the empty places of our hearts.
Key Points
1. Transformation Through Truth — John 4:16–18
When Jesus spoke truth to the Samaritan woman about her life, it wasn’t to condemn her; it was to set her free. He lovingly revealed what was hidden so she could finally walk in freedom.
Truth has a way of breaking chains we didn’t even know we were wearing. God doesn’t expose us to embarrass us — He reveals so that He can heal.
“Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” — John 8:32
When we allow God’s truth to confront our pain, His grace begins to rewrite our story. Healing begins at the point of honesty.
2. Leaving the Water Jar — John 4:28
The moment she understood who Jesus was, the woman left her water jar and ran to tell others. The jar represented her old routine, her burdens, her temporary fixes. Leaving it behind symbolized her shift from survival to purpose.
“Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!” — 2 Corinthians 5:17
We too must learn to release what no longer serves our calling — the need to control, the weight of regret, or the approval of others. Purpose begins when we make room for what’s new.
3. Overflowing Into Others — John 4:39
Her testimony brought an entire village to meet Jesus. She didn’t need a platform or a title — just a willing heart.
“Many of the Samaritans from that town believed in Him because of the woman’s testimony.” — John 4:39
Your story, too, carries power. Every time you share how God met you in your brokenness, you pour living water into someone else’s dry place. Purpose multiplies when it overflows.
4. Living from the Overflow — John 7:38
When we allow God to fill us daily, we stop operating from depletion and start living from overflow. His Spirit continually refreshes and sustains us.
“Whoever believes in Me, as Scripture has said, rivers of living water will flow from within them.” — John 7:38
The more we drink from His presence, the more naturally His love, wisdom, and grace flow through us to others.
Reflections
What truths has God revealed in your life that led to your freedom?
What “water jar” might you need to leave behind to walk in a renewed sense of purpose?
How can your story become a testimony that points others back to Jesus?
Are you living from overflow — or are you pouring from an empty cup?
What might change if you truly believed that your past does not disqualify you, but actually prepares you for purpose?
Closing Thought
When Jesus refreshes your purpose, it’s not about becoming someone new — it’s about rediscovering who you were always meant to be in Him. Like the woman at the well, you may have come empty, but you will leave overflowing.
“Those who drink the water I give will never be thirsty again.” — John 4:14
